Madeleine Burleson

Hello. I’m Madeleine. Life really started for me when I decided to read two books: Rip It Up and Start Again by Simon Reynolds and POPism by Andy Warhol and Pat Hackett. I read these two books within weeks of each other, if not simultaneously, in August of 2008. Without getting into details (I will in some articles I am working on), these two books destroyed my fear of pursuing art and opened up my mind to a new way of thinking about art and life. Since then, my brain has continued to mold the knowledge I gained – adding and subtracting from it – and over time I began to notice the difference in the ways I thought about art and the ways (some, of course) others thought about it. And so I finally decided I needed a forum to get my ideas out of my head and into the world. So after talking about it with people Perichoresis was created.
So, um, I guess that was more of an “about” for this zine/blog than me. But, at this point in my life, you couldn’t have an “about” page about me without discussing Perichoresis since it is becoming a big part of my life and my artistic expression. Along with this, I dabble in anything I can get my hands on, really. Painting, photography, writing, drawing, sculpting, carving, printmaking, sewing, needlework, etc etc. Right now, though, I am finally dabbling (and more) with one of my favourite forms of artistic expression: Music. The original idea was to learn the piano, but instead I’ve focused more on learning how to compose. I’ve been working on that (on and off) since about September of 2009. Since, I am weird and never satisfied with one thing, I am now part of four “bands.” Although, mostly I work alone and release what I compose under the moniker The Silver Factory.
Which is a good transition into my influences/heroes! Firstly and most importantly, Andy Warhol. To say I’m obsessed with him…would be correct. Then there are the no wave bands from the late 70s whose attitude and approach to their art/life helped change mine. After that, its pretty much a hodgepodge of various philosophers and thinkers (same thing?) who I have picked apart and compiled together in my head. Quick list of people and ideas (not mentioned already) that I incorporate into my theory of life (theory of art): Ayn Rand, Alan Watts, Zen Buddhism, Feminism, Anarchism, John Cage, Animal Abolitionism (Veganism), William Blake, my friends, and a fuck ton more. I don’t know, if you want more, you’ll have to ask me or read my articles and guess. I will say currently I’m becoming obsessed with Christopher Hyatt and his influences (the occult!).
This is really long. Would you like some links?
